JOHN POTTER

TRAINING DIRECTOR

John Potter has thirty years’ experience as an educator.  Upon completion of his Graduate Degree/Diploma in Physical Education in the 1970’s, John began his training career as a specialist Physical Education teacher in the United Kingdom.

It was here that he developed skills and knowledge as a trainer/instructor in the emerging area of competency based training in Recreation Management. Towards the end of 1980 he gained a Masters Degree in Leisure Management from Sheffield University and began one of many spells as an international trainer, assessor and presenter.

A four year action research thesis on Corporate Health Management gained a Distinction and was highly praised as “a blueprint for any organisation wanting to embark on a cost effective and productive health management program”.  As a result he was recruited as the European trainer/instructor for the Universal Fitness Institute of America, based in London. This coincided with his appointment in 1992/3 as a Fellow of the British Association of Training, the highest honour bestowed upon training professionals.

After a return to full time education at Kingsway College in London, he developed a national training centre for fitness instructors; one of the few industry training courses for fitness professionals based upon the newly introduced national competency standards.

John later embarked upon studies for a Doctorate in Management at Edith Cowan University in Western Australia. As part of his studies he taught at Central TAFE as a part time lecturer where he then became Principal Lecturer in the School of Health and Community Services at Mt Lawley Campus between 1997 and 2005 where he also worked with Fitness Australia/Western Australia as Manager of the Training Unit.

John’s specialist areas of expertise are in management training and professional development for trainers, instructors and educators working in competency based programs.
